Daved's Story

... was born in 1962 in Monrovia, California, the oldest of three children. By all accounts, Daved was a pretty typical kid who enjoyed riding his bike, gymnastics and weight-lifting. Daved grew up in the Sherman Oaks/Encino area of Los Angeles. Here's what Daved looked like in High School (nifty tux, eh?):  In April, 1989, Daved and ShariAnne met on a blind date. They fell in love and got married in New York after a six month engagement. In September 1993, Daved and ShariAnne adopted two "special needs" children who were born to a crack addicted mother. In August 1998, Daved went into Congestive Heart Failure and was diagnosed with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulminary Disorder). This same disease has been blamed for the deaths of Daved's father and two aunts (two of whom did not smoke cigarettes). Daved's doctors believe his condition is genetic. Before he became ill, Daved was a jack-of-all-trades who worked as a welder, a carpenter, a machinist and a concrete worker. He still enjoys working with his hands but is no longer able to work in any of the trades he is qualified for. In January 2003, Dr. Farber of Mesa Lutheran Hospital referred Daved to see specialist Dr. Fischl. Dr. Fischl is in the process of reviewing Daved's medical history to ensure that he is a candidate for Lung Volume Reduction Surgery, an experimental surgery not covered by insurance. Daved must be in a certain physical condition to have this surgery. This involves being able to walk freely on a treadmill for 30 minutes. Currently, Daved is on oxygen 24 hours a day and can only walk on the treadmill for 5 minutes at a time. If you want to feel how Daved feels every day, do this simple exercise: take a deep breath, then without exhaling, try to take another deep breath. Every breath Daved takes feels like that!
